ENINPA: Ordinal Numbers

Quando queremos descrever algo através de uma sequência, nós usamos um número ordinal. Nós também usamos os ordinais quando nos referimos a séculos, nomes de reis, andares e os dias em datas.

We are on the second floor.

Queen Elizabeth the Second was born in London in 1926.

I was born on April the tenth.

Nas abreviações, nós devemos utilizar as duas últimas letras do ordinal após o algarismo.

1st = the first

3rd = the third

Spelling Rules:

Com exceção de the first, the second e the third, os números ordinais são formados pelo acréscimo de -th ao correspondente número cardinal. Alguns números sofrem pequenas alterações na grafia:

1) Números terminados em -y perderão o -y e receberão -ie antes do -th.

twenty C the twentieth

2) Números terminados em -ve perderão o -ve e receberão -f antes do -th.

five C the fifth

Em compostos, só o segundo elemento transforma-se em ordinal.
