Wh-words

     As palavras interrogativas podem ser:

1) Interrogative Pronouns: WHO / WHOM / WHAT / WHICH

2) Interrogative Determiners: WHAT / WHICH / WHOSE

3) Interrogative Adverbs: WHEN / WHERE / HOW / WHY

 WHO (quem)

     Usado quando desejamos saber a identidade de alguém.

             Who is he? He is my teacher.

 WHAT (o que / qual)

          Usado quando desejamos informações sobre alguma coisa .

 What is this? It is a table.

 What's your name? My name is Kate Ross.


      Alguns substantivos acompanham WHAT na formação de perguntas (WHAT + NOUN):

1) WHAT + COLOR (qual a cor)
       What color is the sofa?  It is blue.
2) WHAT + NATIONALITY (qual a nacionalidade)
         What nationality is he? He is French.
3) WHAT + DAY (qual o dia)
     What day is it today? Today is Wednesday.

4) WHAT + TIME (qual o horário)
      What time is it? It's three o'clock.

 HOW (como)

      Usado quando desejamos informações sobre o modo como algo é/foi feito. É também empregado quando perguntamos sobre saúde, sentimentos e estados emocionais. 

   

 How are you? I'm fine, thank you.

 How do I open it? Hold it and turn the lid to your left.

     HOW pode vir acompanhado por adjetivos e advérbios:

1) HOW OLD (qual a idade) 

 How old is he? He is three years old.

2) HOW TALL (qual a altura)
How tall is she? She is five feet, 2 inches tall. (5'11'').

     Nos Estados Unidos, em geral, o comprimento é medido em pés e polegadas (Sistema Imperial) . One foot (um pé) equivale a 30, 48 cm.  One inch (uma polegada) equivale a 2,54 cm. A abreviatura para foot / feet (plural) é ft. ou ' . A abreviatura para inch / inches é in. ou ". One foot equivale a 12 inches.      How far is the school from the movie theater?  The school is 1 mile (1,6 km) from the movie theater.

5) HOW OFTEN (quantas vezes, com que frequência)

      How often do you go to the cinema? I go to the cinema once a month.

6) HOW LONG ( qual a duração, quanto tempo) 
 How long have you lived here? I have lived here for five years.

7) HOW MANY (substantivos contáveis no plural) / HOW MUCH (substantivos incontáveis) -Usados quando queremos saber a quantidade de algo. 

 How many books do you have? I have four books.

 How much coffee do you want? A cup.

     8) HOW DEEP (qual a profundidade)

 How deep is the lake? It's 2 meters deep.

 WHERE (onde)

Where is the teacher? She's in the classroom.

     A estrutura WHERE +  BE + SUJEITO + FROM é usada quando desejamos saber a procedência de alguém.

  Where are you from? I am from England.

Where is she from? She is from England.

 WHOSE (de quem)

 Whose key is this? It's my key. 

 WHICH (qual, quais) 

     Usado quando desejamos identificar uma pessoa ou coisa em um grupo.

     Which sport do you prefer, "soccer" or "basketball"?

WHOM (quem)

      No inglês formal, Whom pode ser usado como objeto de um verbo.
